The Issue: Underfunded After-School Programming in Uptown Elementary and High Schools
A lack of available funding has left Uptown public schools short on resources to develop educational programs. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) notes that after-school initiatives not only improve attendance and graduation rates, but also provide schoolchildren with a safe environment that insulates them from juvenile crime and substance abuse. The programs are especially important for children from low-income families, who may lack permanent housing or face language barriers between home and school.
The Campaign: Supporting Educational Programs in Uptown
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Uptown United to help fund educational and after-school programs within the Uptown neighborhood. Every $10 raised will be distributed by Uptown United to five CPS schools: Goudy Elementary, McCutcheon Elementary, Uplift Community High School, Courtenay Language Arts Center, and Brennemann Elementary. The money raised in this Grassroots campaign will supplement the funds Groupon is donating ($1 for every Discover Uptown deal sold through May 11, 2017, up to $2,500) to support educational programs in Uptown’s public schools as part of the Discover Uptown campaign.

About Uptown United
Uptown United is committed to nurturing diversity and strengthening community within its namesake neighborhood. Through its three arms—Business Partners, Development Partners, and Community Partners—the organization has led community consensus building to inform the project scope and goals as they relate to the neighborhood businesses and residents. With the support of Uptown United, the Wilson Station Reconstruction Project will complete in late 2017, and the Argyle Streetscaping Project has helped revitalize local business facades, allowing some to feature outdoor dining for the first time. The organization has partnered with Groupon to curate a deal collection that embodies the vibrant character of this Chicago neighborhood. Conveniently located along the Red Line, Uptown is known for its historic entertainment district, which includes the Aragon Ballroom, Riviera Theater, and Green Mill Jazz Club. It's also home to the bustling strip "Asia on Argyle," a destination for Vietnamese and pan-Asian cuisine. As a part of this campaign, Groupon will donate $1 for every Discover Uptown deal sold through May 11, 2017 (up to $2,500) to support educational programs in Uptown's public schools.
