Climbing rocks is the best way man can live like the goat without chewing tin cans or growing regrettable facial hair. Live like nature's bearded kid with today's Groupon to Urban Ascent. Choose from the following options.
• For $13, you get a starter package, which includes a harness and shoes, a lesson, and a day pass (a $26.50 value).
• For $35, you get a 30-day unlimited pass without gear (a $79 value).
• For $75, you get a 30-day unlimited pass (a $79 value) including harness and shoe rental (a $6/day value; a $259 total value).
Urban Ascent sends climbers clambering up routes plotted across a 43-foot indoor endurance-climbing wall and over 14,000 square feet of sport climbs, cracks, and sculpted rock. All new ascenders learn to belay on roped routes during the starter package’s introductory course, mastering basic rope management and rope-charming flute solos before hitting the wall for solo climbs. Gear up with harnesses, rock shoes, and ropes and take to the cable-fastened routes, or free climb without ropes on confidence-building bouldering courses. Handholds are regularly moved, creating new climbs to keep abilities sharpened and janitorial staffs confused.
There is no typical climb at Urban Ascent. With the help of a belaying partner to safeguard their ropes, visitors can scale up to 43 feet of weathered rockface on endurance climbs, or they can stick closer to the ground in the ropes-free bouldering area. Urban Ascent’s team challenges climbers by regularly revamping the 14,000-square-foot gym’s routes, rearranging footholds and installing pop-out boxing-glove gags to add an element of unpredictability to climbs. During private climbing lessons, instructors fine-tune veteran climbers’ techniques or teach newbies basic fundamentals. The staff also imparts climbing-safety basics to first-time belayers in 20-minute tutorials. Urban Ascent hosts summer camps, afterschool climbing activities for students, and corporate team-building workshops.
