What You'll Get
In Paleolithic-era scavenger hunts, everyone who gathered enough berries to avoid starvation was a winner; most winners, however, were still eaten by leopards. Enjoy less perilous scavenging with today’s Groupon: for $60, you get a two-person team registration to the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride on Sunday, September 18 at 10 a.m. (up to a $120 value). Participants must register by 4 p.m. on Friday, September 16.
The Urban Assault Ride, which is sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, sends biwheeled lads and lasses on a citywide bicycle scavenger hunt to scour Charlotte for checkpoints containing whimsical obstacle courses. Each course is kept under wraps until the race, but past challenges have included human bowling, piggyback polo, and paperboy relay. Two-person teams will choose their own route and checkpoint order for the concrete journey, speeding off from Independence Park on Hawthorne Lane before venturing out in search of obstacle checkpoints and two mystery checkpoints. The team to cruise through all checkpoints in the shortest amount of time wins, and the top-three road-warrior duos will receive prizes for their valiant efforts, such as Timbuk2 bags, Keen shoes, and Urban Assault Ride socks and arm warmers.
After crossing the finish line, all teams can celebrate at the after-party, teeming with New Belgium beer, big wheels, and raffle prizes. Aside from providing an exhilarating experience, the Urban Assault Ride helps promote and encourage bicycle commuting and does its civic cyclical duty by implementing myriad environmental practices and contributing the proceeds to local nonprofits, including the Charlotte Area Bicycle Alliance and Trips for Kids Charlotte.
