In the Victorian era, extreme sports were limited to teatime without doilies, writing witty satires about earnestness, and riding a penny-farthing down a mild incline. Today's Groupon would shock such staid sensibilities: for $21, you get a half-day whitewater rafting tour on the French Broad River from USA Raft, located in Marshall, about three and half hours from Greensboro. Tours take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. seven days a week, rain or shine, from now until the season ends on November 1.
USA Raft's half-day trip along the wide, free-flowing French Broad River creates an exciting outing for all levels of rafting skill. Arrive at the site 30 minutes before departure time to outfit your body in vogue rafting apparel and outfit your naked mind with the words of the trip orientation and safety talk. A helmet, personal flotation device, and paddle will be provided and a bus will take you about 15 minutes away to your drop-off site. A first-aid-and-CPR-certified guide will be present in every raft, directing you through the lively froth of class II and III rapids. At designated sites, you'll get to cool off with a swim and impress fellow rafters with your ability to bake a cake underwater. After you arrive back on land, you will be nourished with a post-paddle snack. All in all, the trip lasts about four hours (including travel and orientation) and you will travel a distance of about five miles.
The rafting season ends November 1, 2010, so buy your Groupon and get a move on before the river's bluster quiets to a dull monotone that never laughs at your jokes.
Reservations are required and you must be at least 8 years old to participate.
