Creating a masterwork of photographic art can be like wandering through a maze: after a lengthy period of self-reflection and contemplation, you’ll still probably starve. Appreciate the figurative risks and transcendent joys of photographic creativity with today’s Groupon: for $49, you get a four-hour digital photography workshop plus a same-day two-hour interactive photo safari (a $450 total value) from Val Westover Photography. This Groupon is good for the "Capturing True Emotion" workshop, which is currently scheduled at least once a month through March 2011 at and around the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale.
Workshops run from 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.; photo safaris take place from 2:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. Groupon holders may split the class and safari portions between two dates or combine them back-to-back on the same day. For complete schedule info, check the sidebar to the right.
The "Capturing True Emotion" workshop is driven by the dynamic duo of Val Westover, a dedicated author and portrait photographer, and Stephanie Adriana, an author and award-winning fine-art photographer. By fusing their narrative, tech-savvy minds together into one oversized head, the two provide comprehensive guidance on both camera operation and creative visualization.
During your four hours spent in the company of other pupating shutterbugs, you'll learn how to control depth of field by adjusting the aperture, strategies for lighting an artful chupacabra sighting, how to compose a family portrait so that there’s not always a burning zeppelin in the background, how to avoid red eyes using alternative angles and Visine, and more. After the workshop, you'll depart with Val Westover's book, A Photographer’s Guide to Success, which comes bound tightly with tips, tricks, practice exercises, reference material, and glue.
Whether you're a seasoned sniper with your shuttered shooter or looking to better know a birthday gift, Val Westover Photography’s four-hour session in the photo dojo will have your camera-op chops in top shape, while the two-hour interactive photo safari gives you a chance to put recently acquired skills to work in the gritty, real-world trenches, which offer numerous chances to capture baby lizards and frolicking salespeople. Call ahead to schedule your workshop.

About Val Westover Photography
Val Westover and Stephanie Adriana, both authors and photographers, draw from diverse artistic backgrounds. Val once trained hundreds of photographers as the manager of a nationwide portrait studio, and Stephanie has seen her work featured in an array of photography and fashion magazines. Applying fine-tuned artistic styles, they snap candid photojournalistic compositions and posed portraits of new couples, newborns, mothers-to-be, families, and secret families.
They also pass on their skills through step-by-step workshops, during which they use a blend of professional tips and practice exercises to teach the basics of ISO, shutter, and aperture alongside applied artistic principles. They then give protégés free rein to practice what they’ve learned in hands-on, on-location photo safaris, during which students capture shots of wildlife and people.
