Valcour Brewing Company
In the late 1830s, Plattsburgh was chosen as the site of a proposed quadrangle barracks for the U.S. Army. Though only two of the four buildings were ever actually constructed, the barracks became a very important post on the Lake Champlain corridor.
Nearly 200 years later, the folks behind Valcour Brewing transformed the abandoned National Historic Landmark into a brewery in 2015. And, oddly enough, Valcour Brewing uses the barracks for its original purpose: as a place for visitors to eat, drink, and, if necessary, spend the night. The brewery features a seven-room inn onsite, and it churns out flatbreads, paninis, and burgers in its kitchen. Of course, Valcour pours plenty of its handcrafted brews, too, including:
Elwood's Double Wood Smoked Porter (5.2%): This brew is crafted with hand-smoked crystal grain over local apple and maple wood. It features a blend of chocolate, black patent, and roasted barley, and it's hopped with all English hops.
Benedict Arnold's Double IPA (7.4%): Infused with a blend of Golden Promise 2 Row, Red X, and carabrown malted barley, this heavy-hitting IPA packs a punch thanks to more than 25 pounds of Warrior, chinook, and cascade hops.
