What You'll Get
Some people consider the Potomac River to be fertile ground for finding a loving pet sea trout. Others see the accessible yet challenging whitewaters as the best place to experiment with kayaking. Browse for a suitable family fish with today's deal: for $44, you get a three-hour kayaking adventure down the Potomac and through the rapids of the Mather Gorge from Valley Mill Kayak School (an $89 value). Trips run every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.–11 a.m., May to October.
All Valley Mill instructors are certified by the American Canoe Association and are personally trained by Eric Jackson, a former Olympian and world-champion freestyle kayaker. The trip plops you atop a sit-on-top Riviera kayak, which is designed to make it easier to climb back on board after being assaulted by a slight ripple or an octopus. Easy to handle and easy to paddle, the Riviera is an ideal choice for someone who is seeking a fun, stress-free float. The choose-your-own watery adventure has three options: taking serene pathways to Carderock Park or Rocky Island or following the more adventurous path to Mather Gorge, which requires paddlers to carry their kayaks over a stretch.
Though this isn’t a lesson, you will have the chance to glean some basic river-running skills and navigate some smooth-as-butter class II rapids. Valley Mill provides all gear and guides.
Kayakers must weigh between 100–275 pounds and be able to swim. Call in advance to schedule your trip.

About Valley Mill Kayak School
Since 1956, Valley Mill Kayak School has trained countless kayakers, including the first kayaking recipients of Olympic medals, on the deep waters of the Potomac River. A former Olympian and four-time freestyle-kayaking world champion, Eric Jackson personally designs the school's lesson plans around modern whitewater-paddling techniques. Eric trains each of the school's American Canoe Association–certified instructors, who, in turn, dispense their knowledge to beginners and proficient paddlers alike.
Through a wealth of small classes, private lessons, and occasional clinics taught by Eric himself, pupils discover such skills as paddling and basic strokes, or attempting to work your kayak into rhythmic-gymnastics routines.
