The best part of rafting is the exhilaration of exploration, up until you realize the difficulty of paddling through pudding in your bathtub and must face yourself in the mirror. Take to a real river with today's Groupon: for $83, you get a paddle or power whitewater-rafting day trip on the Thompson River from Hyak River Rafting, based in Burnaby (up to a $166.75 value). On the day of their trip, water adventurers meet at 176 Trans Canada Highway in Lytton.
For more than 30 years, Hyak River Rafting’s licensed and certified guides have led rafting parties down the flumes of the Thompson River. During the 36-kilometre paddle excursion, boaters navigate both powerful waves and quiet stretches bound within the steep walls of the Black Canyon. Adventurers desiring horsepower can opt for the 5.5-hour power day trip, which follows the same route on the Thompson but occasionally levitates as it turns upstream to reconquer rapids dubbed Jaws of Death and Cutting Board. Each trip offers river conquistadors a refuelling shoreline lunch, as well as a refreshing hot shower at the end of the trip. Hyak outfits oar dunkers with all rafting gear, including sheet music for jaunty singalongs, and offers recommendations of things to bring for each expedition.
The Thompson paddling trips depart on July 9, 10, and then daily July 16–Sept 25 from the Lytton base at 10:30 a.m. Sunday–Friday and at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays. Through July 1, the power day trips depart on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. From July 1 through September 3 , power day trips depart daily at 11:30 a.m.
