Climb atop a meated and vegetabled, perfectly crusted cheese plateau and tromp among its wonder-flavors with this Groupon: $10 for $25 worth of pizza at Varasano's Pizzeria. Varasano's is the hot, saucy, and much-hyped pizza paradise of Jeff Varasano, a former software engineer who spent years trying to perfect the perfect pie.
Varasano's pizzas are a cross between NY-style (he grew up in the Bronx) and Neapolitan. They're "kissed by a mottled black patina, which makes the chewy-to-crispy ratio just right," according to Creative Loafing, and cooked in a special Swedish oven that gets the pizza hot enough to perfectly cook, with a "crunch, squish, ooze" and "mmm," says Atlanta Magazine.
The house special, Nana's, is a mozzarella and tomato sauce pizza with a secret blend of Italian herbs. The menu also has pizzas such as New Haven clam, caramelized onion, Margherita, and the Nucci (a garlic, onion, and Emmentaler pizza finished with arugula, capocollo, and herbs). Fair warning: Varasano's only makes good food, so even if you demand a pizza topped with abacus beads and crispy silver dollars, the staff willl probably decline. Service is friendly and professional, and the staff can tell you anything you need to know about the innovative wunderpies, which are served in a spacious black and red dining room.
Reviews
Varasano's Pizzeria has been written about and reviewed by the New York Times, Creative Loafing, Atlanta Magazine, Jezebel Magazine, and more:
- Mr. Varasano has followed pizza-making to an abnormal level of compulsion. – Chris Ladd, New York Times
- ...his pizza is, for the most part, blatantly delicious. The crust is thin — crispy but not cracker-like. The bottom is kissed by a mottled black patina, which makes the chewy-to-crispy ratio just right... No, it's not New York pizza. It's not Naples-style. It's not New Haven and it's not Mullumbimby. It's Varasano's, which is a worthy addition. – Besha Rodell, Creative Loafing
- It's deeply satisfying... Over several review visits, the Nana's and other variations at Varasano's have been more and more rewardingly attuned. This may well be the finest pizza in Atlanta. – Bill Addison, Atlanta Magazine
- With his use of San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, it was obvious that Varasano prized quality. And then it happened: The first pie appeared from the oven, its wafting aromas reminding me of an authentic Italian trattoria. My taste buds were set to explode, but Varasano still needed to gauge the pie for temperature before we cold grab a slice. Needless to say, anticipation was at an all time high, and when it was time, I took a bite. The rest is, well, history. – Beth Weitzman, Jezebel Magazine
More than 60 Yelpers give Varasano's Pizzeria an average 3.5 stars, and Citysearchers give it 4.5:
- I have found the Holy Grail of great pizza!!! – Hannah C., Yelp
- ...the pizzas are wonderfully unique, landing somewhere in between a NYC street slice and a Naples-style pie. – Jonathan Baker, Citysearch
- Freshness is a key word here, because that's what everything is. From the sauce to the cheese to the herbs, everything tastes really carefully selected and prepared. Ignore all the hype about this restaurant - just go and experience it with an open mind. – EatinE, Citysearch
