Helmed by head coach Paul Keyes and currently reigning as Colonial Athletic Association conference champions for the 2011 season, the Virginia Commonwealth University baseball team has swung and sprinted its way to the top of the CAA five times in the past decade. The 2011 roster sports five returning starters and a talented staff of strike-hurlers, such as Seth Cutler-Voltz and Kyle Haynes. The Rams’ lineup of daring bat wielders also features locally produced players, such as Richmond’s Jonathan Watson, Charlottesville’s Ryan Caldwell, Midlothian’s Josh Alford, and Powhatan’s Brent Mikionis, allowing spectators to shout out regional inside jokes to confuse not-from-the-area opponents.
Baseball, one of the world’s most popular sports, is so significant because of its poetic simplicity: no baskets, nets, or T-shirt guns that blast out shaving cream. Cheer on the Rams as they rampage toward victory over a nonviolent army of baseball teams.
