When you draw a crowd on the dance floor, it means you either possess awe-inspiring moves or are a black hole. Become a dance star with today's Groupon: for $20, you get four drop-in dance classes at Vega Dance Lab (a $42 value).
Vega Dance Lab offers dancers respite from the daily grind, instructing classes in contemporary dance, street jazz, hip-hop, and other styles. Designed for people with erratic schedules, the weekly calendar allows for body shakers to show up and get their shimmy on at whim. Dancing divas impart confident, girlish routines to beginners in classes such as Burly Q––a burlesque-inspired blend of classic cabaret and new-fashioned flirtation. Modern/Contemporary Dance sets feet free from the formal footwork of ballet in favor of expressive, kinetic rug cutting that only conforms to rules of coordination and musicality, and Hip-Hop Cabaret pays homage to Liza Minnelli's brief stint with Run DMC. Boasting a warehouse-like setting that features dancers frolicking amid exposed-brick walls and hardwood floors, Vega Dance Lab provides a setting perfect for picking up new moves or reenacting the lost musical sequence from Reservoir Dogs. Classes are open to dancers of all experience levels, but are designed primarily for dancers age 16 and up.
Vega Dance Lab
After several years of suffering through classes filled with tweens, or missing sessions because of rigid scheduling, Evie Graham started her own dance studio. At Vega Dance Lab, everyone from people who have never strapped on groove shoes to seasoned students aged 16 and older can school their left feet or untalented dancing bears in nine dances on a drop-in basis. Shuffle-savvy instructors school pupils in proper ballet technique, burlesque-inspired choreography, and hip-hop cabaret, where dancers perform hip-hop moves with a cabaret-inspired flair.
Teachers also integrate dance into intensive workouts such as Cardio Funk, an exercise regimen set to hip-hop music, or Tease & Tone, a session divided between 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of dance. Lessons kick off six days a week in Vega Dance Lab’s spacious, graffiti-decorated warehouse where students can test their latest moves by dancing out of the way of oncoming forklifts.
