Emily DeNitto of the New York Times penned a favorable review of Vega Mexican Cuisine, concluding, “most of the food at Vega tastes fresh.” The authentic cuisine’s freshness and variety is merely one half of the equation that makes the restaurant a draw, however; the decor commands respect in its own right. Sunlight streams in through large windows, bouncing off statuesque tree branches—yes, trees—that stretch high above purple booths and mingle with the light cast from ornate, castle-worthy chandeliers. It’s like frolicking through an enchanted forest and exploring a gothic mansion at the same time.
This truly unique atmosphere, awash in bright colors and other contemporary decor, juxtaposes whimsically with the authentic Mexican dishes painstakingly whipped up in the kitchen. Shrimp ceviche, chilies rellenos, chicken fajitas, and freshly made chips with jalapeño-laced salsa arrive at booths with purple, tube-like back support. These booths are surrounded by exposed brick and wooden walls, as well as ceilings high enough to fit both the trees and NBA players swinging from chandelier to chandelier, such as New York Knicks star Tyson Chandelier.
