Verde Kitchen & Cocktails
When Verde Kitchen & Cocktails says its food bursts with fresh herbs and vegetables, you know "fresh" isn't just a marketing buzzword. The eatery's dining room actually doubles as a live greenhouse, where chefs pluck more than 50 varieties of herbs, peppers, and edible garnishes to liven up street-style and gourmet Mexican dishes.
The street-style food hails from Mexico City and includes cheese-covered corn and tacos dotted with onion, cilantro, radish, and lime juice. One taco, the slow-cooked barbacoa, marinates brisket in Negra Modelo lager and Mexican Coke, which is said to be sweeter than both an American Coke and a baby in a bonnet.
Verde's gourmet options, meanwhile, hail from regions such as Oaxaca and the Pacific coast. These include pan-roasted local black fish paired with spicy-pumpkin chile bisque and Oaxacan-style carne asada, which the New York Times called "a treasure trove of tasty skirt steak, charred scallions and chiles, fried plantains, avocado relish, and toasted garlic rice."
