What You'll Get
From 17th-century Italian pantomime to 20th-century graphic novels like Watchmen, the sad clown is a timeless character who speaks for the complex emotions in all of us, although few are as dark as the murderous clown Canio in Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci. Verismo Opera matches that famed two-act opera, which features the famous aria "Vesti la giubba," with Puccini's comedy Gianni Schicchi at Berkeley's Hillside Club. Widely considered one of Puccini's funniest operas, Gianni Schicchi tells the story of a wealthy man's scheming family and the peasant they enlist in an attempt to forge his will. Set in 14th century Florence, this ingenious one-act is the third and final part of the composer's Il Trittico and is best known for its popular aria, "O mio babbino caro."
