Small classes learn history of welding in sculpture before crafting their own pieces from steel, flint & bone as they sip wine
Art helps people reach a wide audience without shouting from the top of radio towers, provocatively dancing behind a local TV field reporter, or tying speech bubbles to migrating birds. Express yourself with this Groupon.
$69 for a "Melding with Welding" Beginners' Welding Sculpture Class ($300 Value)
The 4- to 5-hour class begins with a half-hour lecture on the history of welding in sculpture, exploring the innovations of binding steel, flint, and bone. Six to eight students follow along as the instructor demonstrates the craft of tungsten inert-gas welding (TIG), after which each student assembles two mild steel plates and three stainless-steel rods into stands to hold their sculptures. Participants then choose a flint and bone item that resembles an anthropomorphic form, which they weld to their stands or the hood of their Maseratis. An included glass of wine stimulates creative impulses, and after an end-of-class critique, students return home with their creations in tow.
Classes are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 5 p.m.
