What You'll Get
Jump to: Reviews | Stretched Straight
This Groupon gently stretches your muscles and joints, a pleasant sensation sought after by bungee cords, Laffy Taffies, and Stretch Armstrongs. For $60, you get 10 yoga classes at Vessel Yoga, a clean, spacious studio that offers courses for beginners, experienced practitioners, and prenatal yogites. A 10-class card usually costs $120 at Vessel, a primarily donation-based studio, so you can practice at a price that's comfortable for you even after your Groupon runs out.
Your 10 classes are valid for an entire six months, so you can stretch out your stretches into a longer stretch of stretches. Classes take place several times a day (except Sunday) and last for 60 to 75 minutes. Try Yin yoga, a candlelit and meditative session that focuses on long holds and stretching of connective tissues in the hips, shoulders, and lower back. Be careful which incantations you choose as your personal mantra, so as to summon only relaxation spirits, not the dreaded Arhk-B'g Sygoth, the Sumerian Devourer.
Vessel's owner and chief instructor is a Nike-sponsored yoga athlete who has been teaching yoga for seven years. She helps students sweat and stretch until they're calmer, more energized, and more revitalized than the 217 rechargeable AA batteries that power Great America. Her comfortable and homey studio is located in the West Loop on Lake Street.
If you're new to yoga, this is a great chance to learn the downward dog, upward dog, and the Mississippi Steamer. Yoga stretches your muscles, releasing lactic acid that causes stiffness and pain. It also increases flexibility and strength (deep core muscles support each pose), which improves range of motion, balance, and posture (good posture is vital to moving up in the corporate world, seeing over the steering wheel, and sitting down).
Vessel Yoga has a perfect five stars on Yelp:
- The classes will challenge you, but never leave you feeling discouraged. I always walk out of the studio feeling better than I did going in. – Kelly H.
- What a joy to find this studio! Margo, the owner is delightful and has a real gift and passion for teaching. She's always encouraging and inspiring her students. – Jill B.
- ...I was very impressed...I loved the decor and homey feeling of the studio, and it's a completely zero stress experience – Marils R.
The Fine Print
Promotional value expires Mar 22, 2010. Amount paid never expires. Limit 1 per person. Must use all 10 classes within 6 months. Merchant is solely responsible to purchasers for the care and quality of the advertised goods and services.
About Vessel Yoga Chicago
Margo Kellison developed a passion for yoga after just one class. Previously a marathon runner, Kellison—now a certified yoga instructor at Vessel Yoga—originally tried the sport as a way to ease knee problems, and instead adopted it as her new vocation. After studying under celebrated yogis such as Baron Baptiste, Seane Corn, and Yogi Bear, then collaborating with Nike designers to create yoga products, Kellison settled down in Chicago to open Vessel Yoga. Today, with more than a decade's worth of experience under her spandex waistband, Kellison makes it her mission to mint new yogis through five different class sizes grounded in the Vinyasa tradition. Classes take place in a naturally lit studio with hardwood floors, exposed-brick walls, and wooden beams.
