Glass provides a resting place for wine, evening wear for Cinderellas, and a more dramatic exit from 44th-floor windows for Bruce Willises. Shatter artistic inhibitions with today's Groupon: for $75, you get a one-on-one glass-blowing session at Vetro Glass Blowing Studio & Art Gallery in Grapevine (a $150 value).
Vetro Glass Blowing Studio & Art Gallery, winner of the WFAA-List’s award for best art gallery, offers the public an inside peek at renowned glass artists working on fragile creations. In a 30-minute, artist-instructed session, students help create one hand-blown, fluted glass bowl, choosing colors from among the vibrant Vetro palette.
Assist the veteran artist in adding hues to a gather of molten glass, then heat up the future masterpiece in a 2,000-degree furnace, steadfastly ignoring the temptation to drop in all tax-related paperwork. Delicate designers work alongside the artist, fashioning the bowl to suit any key, fruit, or gummy-peach-holding configuration.
All bowls created during the lesson stay in the studio overnight to cool and can be picked up the next business day after 3 p.m. or mailed for an additional fee. Vetro’s quaint confines look every bit like the Platonic ideal of a glass-blowing workshop, with industrial shutters surrounding the sintering flames of the furnace while high ceilings and broad workstations ensure plenty of space for spinning silicate. The studio is also home to an impressive indoor gallery containing the sculptural work, vases, rondels, and haunted mirrors created by professional artists.
