Following the Battle of Port Royal of November 1861, Laura Towne and Ellen Murphy came to St. Helena Island to start educating the newly freed slaves. They taught them at the Brick Baptist Church, a church built by slaves in 1855 not knowing they would get their freedom 7 years later. The Penn Center was the site in the 1960's of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Andrew Young and Joan Baez gave lectures and sang here.
