Day 1: Los Angeles to Monterey along California Coast

Stop At: Pacific Coast Highway, 147161, CA
Day 1 - Los Angeles to Salinas and Monterey. 375 miles:

Leaving Union Station at 10:15 a.m. ride through suburbs and Simi Valley, Fillmore, orange groves and green houses, Pacific coast at Oxnard. The train hugs the shore to the most magnificent vistas. West through Santa Barbara and Goleta through rural land we pass through Vandenberg Space Station, fields of strawberries and miles of new vines. Leaving the coast at Pismo Beach to San Luis Obispo the train chugs up Cuesta Grade through six or seven tunnels then drops down going to the horse ranches and pastures of Paso Robles. At Camp Roberts we enter Monterey County along the Salinas River. Oil fields give way to the Valley, one of the richest agricultural areas in California. Riding through one of the largest vineyards we see miles of broccoli, lettuce, flowers and berries. The train lets us off in Salinas to stay the night or car transfer takes us to Casa Munras Hotel (or similar). It should be just after 7:15 in the evening.

Day 2: Monterey Big Sur Peninsula Tour to San Jose

Stop At: Big Sur, Big Sur, California
If you spend the night in Monterey at about 9:00 go south on Highway One to Big Sur stopping at Bixby Bridge, the Coastal Redwoods and Nepenthe.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, 47225 Highway 1, Big Sur, CA 93920-9542
Hiking in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Far from the crowds you can enjoy a late morning hike under the Coastal Redwoods going to Pfeiffer Falls. These are easy to moderate hikes. You need walking shoes, appropriate clothing, hat and head scarf for shade from the sun. Suggested hikes. Distances are round trip from trailhead. A)1.4 miles. About an hour. Easy scenic hike along the Creek through finest redwood groves to a 60-foot high waterfall. B) 2 miles – About an hour and a half. Add ½ a mile from Pfeiffer Falls. See beautiful views of Point Sur and Big Sur Valley. C) 3 miles – About two hours. Moderate hike with more redwood groves, open oak woodlands and dry chaparral. Depending on your choice the time spent at other stops on the trip will have to adjusted.

Stop At: Monterey, Monterey, Monterey County, California
Monterey Peninsula Tour and then to San Jose.

At about 12:30 p.m. for a tour of historic Monterey, Cannery Row, Pacific Grove, 17 Mile Drive, where the Lone Cypress stands guard and golf courses and mansions of Pebble Beach. Time in Carmel by the Sea for shopping & browsing.

CONTINUE TO SAN JOSE. Leaving Monterey at about 5:15 drive through Castroville and miles of artichoke and strawberry fields. At Moss Beach see the interesting Elkhorn Sloug. The road continues through seaside communities of Aptos and Capitola and Santa Cru Then on Redwood Highway the rural lands give way to Silicon Valley and San Jose. You reach Diridon Station by about 7:00. If you have pre arranged a transfer to San Francisco or Oakland Berkeley area it will take another hour or so.
