Guided Tour of the Canadian Automotive Museum

Canadian Automotive Museum

What You'll Get

Arrive at the Canadian Automotive Museum at 99 Simcoe Street South in Oshawa.

Begin the guided tour in the museum lobby with an overview. The museum was founded in 1963 as Canada's first public automotive collection. The building itself dates to 1920 as a Chevrolet/Oakland dealership, which sold cars assembled only a few blocks away in downtown Oshawa.

The tour moves to the main floor with an impressive collection of seven Rolls-Royces imported by prominent Canadian families. Of particular note are the 1912 Rolls-Royce, owned by department store heiress Lady Eaton in Toronto, and the 1914 Rolls-Royce owned by Canada's Sir Mortimer Davis, a Canadian businessman and philanthropist, in Montreal.

In contrast to these beautiful imported cars are two 1909 Canadian-built cars — a rare, one-of-a-kind Kennedy high-wheeler and the earliest surviving Canadian Ford Model-T. Jumping 'Back to the Future,' the tour continues with 1983 DeLorean, which was one of only 88 modified for sale in the Canadian market.

The second floor contains the built-in Canada gallery, featuring vehicles from a McLaughlin Carriage to a 1971 Manic GT sports car. The scandalous story of OJ Brooks and the Brooks Steam Car in Stratford, Ontario is a favourite among visitors, with deception, intrigue, and mystery. The Canadian cars feature the stories of their owners, including one who loved his Packard so much he moved it into his spare bedroom.

After the formal tour, explore the Canadian Automotive Museum at leisure and have any questions answered by staff and volunteers.
