This was my second Secret Food Tour. The first one was awesome and amazingly enough this tour in the Mission District in San Francisco surpassed the first. Our guide Mark had a deep culinary background as well as personal history with the Mission District and was the perfect guide. Every aspect of the tour was great but I think the piece that set it apart was the mingling of the food with the history and cultural background of the street art.

Mark did a great job bringing us around the mission district. This is not your typical food tour as it mixes food, art, and history all into one. The first stop was a heavier meal and mark did a great job filling the time afterward with history and murals so that you were ready for the next stop. We had a great time with mark and all of our fellow tour members! We definitely feel a deeper appreciation for the mission district and the people in it!

Mark is a 4th generation San Franciscan, so he is truly steeped is the city’s history. Plus he worked in the food industry for decades and does private cooking classes. He does not show off, but guests can totally pick his brain about anything foodie related and he is more than willing to share.
The food focused on Latino dishes, which makes sense, being that it is the Latino neighborhood. From the mission burrito to birria (goat taco), to Mexican pastries and plantain chips and more – everything was tasty. The food is humble and the spots are casual, yet with a great vibe.
A huge part of the tour was looking at the murals. I hadn’t realized just how many there are (and probably still don’t realize). But there are a ton and they are all creative, lively works of art. Lots of bright colors. Mark knows quite a bit about a lot of them, as well as the organization that makes it all happen (from the paint to the hiring the artists). And we wandered in there as well, in between food stops.
This tour was a blend of food, art and history – with more art than you will find in most food tours. But it completely worked to enhance the experience.
