Points of Interest

Stop At: Glenn H. Curtiss Museum8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport, New YorkGlenn Curtiss began his career as a builder of bicycles and then, motorcycles. In 1907 he became the "fastest man on earth" when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on his V8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss motorcycles that are on display. On July 4th, 1908, Curtiss gained notoriety of a different kind when he flew his flying machine, named the "June Bug", a distance of over 5000 feet to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America - a feat that earned him pilot's license # 1. A full-sized reproduction of the "June Bug" is one of several historic aircraft on display. In addition to motorcycles and aircraft, visitors will also see antique tools, toys, boats, and much more. There's something here for everyone!Duration: Not Available

This was a nice, small, clean museum. I went with my husband and my 7-year-old and 8-year-old sons. I read many reviews online prior to going to this museum trying to find a place that would engage both of my boys. I found many reviews stating this was a fun place for kids with interactive learning opportunities, etc. My oldest son really enjoyed the museum, because he very mature for his age and is really into airplanes. However, my 7-year-old was bored within the first five minutes of our entry. There was an area of the museum with coloring pages, and a few Lego toys for much younger children to play with. There was what looked like a flight simulation chair with the handles, etc in front of a tv screen; however, it wasn't working and there weren't any posted directions, etc. That may have been a saving grace for my son, but we will never know! If you are coming with children, I would recommend really gauging how much your children want to just look at displays.

So, just by happenchance, my wife and I were "finger Lake" hopping and checking out antique stores etc. when I spy a large prop plane in a distant field. The owner of said antique store mentioned that it is a great experience and we should visit the "Glenn H. Curtiss" Naval Aviation Museum!! Man am i glad we did... This is a very well organized museum that covers planes, trains and automobiles!! They have so many original early era motorcycles its crazy. The planes cover first flight to modern times with a great realistic flight simulator that possibly you can fly better than i crashed. Currently, an ongoing restoration of a crashed p40 is going on and you can pop right into the garage (hanger), and check that out as well. Just an Awesome experience for anyone but especially those with interest in history!!! Kids will love this place.

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum exceeded our expectations! For a reasonable price, we delved into the--to me, unknown-- history of a father of aviation. A documentary fully orients the viewer, explaining the many fascinating aspects of this remarkable man in a remarkable time. There are lots of touchable exhibits-- period aircraft, cars, motorcycles, bikes. The museum goer is free to roam through the exhibits without being hovered over, but knowledgeable people can answer your questions. Quite an enriching afternoon. Oh, and call to see if tickets are available.

Nice museum to a great innovator of the early 20th century. The film is fascinating and the collection of early bicycles, motorcycles, and planes is impressive. The Wright Brothers may have beem first to fly and were quite concerned with creating a legacy but Curtiss had more innovations and a long lasting impact on aviation. He's a textbook example of how sometimes history can sometimes be shaped by people who are concerned with creating a legacy over those who just want to get things done. If you watch the movie figure around 2 hrs
