Was a very good trip around the island. Coffee plantation was an excellent surprise. Guide was very informative and provided some good tips for exploring on our own
We are a small company started by two Geologists that have the drive and inspiration to teach Hawaii's geological past along with all the other forms of this islands beauty. Saddle Road, Hawaii, is considered among the most spectacular roads in the world. This is 55-mile drive of a chance of a lifetime experience. Hawaii’s Route 200 goes through all four of her climates – tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, you’ll see a few places with lava flows and young vegetation and trees. Near the road you can see where lava thickened and left the telltale mounds of a slowing flow. Just after mile 23, you’ll come close to a popular local landmark, Pu`u Huluhulu, which is an older Mauna Kea cinder cone, or kīpuka, and it’s surrounded by younger lava flows. At this point, you’re near the peak height for Saddle Road, about 1.25 miles in elevation – 6,632 feet. From here, you’ll continue through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity as you head toward Belt Road, where you’ll eventually descend into Kona or Waikoloa.

Our tour guide Dave was awesome. We were able to see a lot of the island and spend time in the national park was well worth it.

As first timers to the island, this was an incredible trip. We had Eric then David as our guide. They both shared so much about the rock formations and the island in general, and could answer every obscure question we had. Logistically it was great to be collected from Waikoloa, rather than having to meet a tour in Hilo for an early morning departure. Our small group's first stop was Heavenly Coffee - amazing! We didn't know how coffee was made, and sampling the different coffees was the perfect pick-me-up to head onto the black sands beach (with fresh donuts), then the volcanoes. Highly recommend treating yourself to the cheeseburger for lunch. The island beef was delicious. The whole trip was well organized (they even had rain jackets ready to go when the weather turned), super informative, and wonderfully friendly. Looking at the serious lack of parking in Volcanoes National Park, we were glad we chose a tour, and even happier we'd had such a brilliant day with Hawaii Geo Tours.
