We had such a great time with iVentures in Vieques!! We HIGHLY recommend this trip. Be aware that it is a lot of travel time, but the BioBay is SO SO SO WORTH IT!! Rafael picked us up on time in a white sprinter van. The A/C worked well, there was plenty of room for all the guests and our bags, and he communicated well with us by phone call and text the day before and the day of. It was about 1hr drive from San Juan to the ferry terminal, then about 30 minutes waiting at the ferry terminal. The waiting area isn't air conditioned, but it is covered and there are restrooms, vending machines, and another member of our group found some hot food to buy, so it wasn't too bad. The ferry ride took about 1 hour, I recommend sitting on the lower level. Although there are larger windows on the upper level, it does get fairly warm about halfway through. Downstairs was cooler. Once we got to Vieques, it was a quick and easy transition to the next sprinter van and a ~10 minute drive to the beach. We got to see wild horses just chilling on the side of the road along the way! Sun Bay Beach was BEAUTIFUL and not crowded at all. We had a nice swim, the water was SUPER calm! But there was a lot of seaweed floating in the water and under your feet - not an issue for me, but good to know. I would recommend wearing your swimwear from the beginning of the tour so you don't have to try and change in the van at the beach. Rafael brought along a cooler and had fruit, a few beers, bottled water, and some cookies for us to enjoy at the beach. It was a LOVELY afternoon! Then we took the van to the main strip in Vieques, where there are several restaurants you can choose from for dinner. You will be hungry, but I recommend trying to eat LIGHT if you can. We were SO FULL on the way to the kayaking, I wish I had taken it easier at dinner :) We chose to eat at "Bananas" and had the calamari and escargot apps, and shared the skirt steak entree. Everything was tasty and came out SUPER fast! Plus 2 rounds of delicious cocktails each! Do be aware that they can only split checks 2 ways, so if you have a larger group maybe try letting the server know ahead of time or be willing to pay cash/venmo each other. Then we walked a little ways down the street (~2 minutes) to check in for the kayaking expedition, and left our bags & stuff with Rafael. We took a short school bus on about a 20-minute drive to the biobay as the sun was setting. Friends, this drive is ROUGH. So be ready -- but it is SO worth it! Once we arrived at the bay, we met our kayaking guide, David. He was AMAZING, so funny, so relatable, so knowledgeable. You can tell he really really loves this place and his job. The sun had not fully set yet as we climbed into our two-person kayaks with our life jackets on. The guides take your shoes and tie them in the front of the kayak so you don't scratch the see-through surface on the bottom of the boats. We made a little flotilla by holding on to each other's kayaks until everyone was ready, then we set off on our adventure. As the evening grew darker, we began to see the water start to glow as we agitated it with our paddles, our hands, etc. David gave great little talks about the bay, science, conservation, the stars, etc. along the way. We felt like wizards doing magic, playing in the bioluminescent water and looking up at the millions of stars! My husband even teared up in amazement! I truly cannot convey the sense of awe, wonder, amazement, and calm that we experienced here. It was almost impossible for us to capture in photos or videos, so we just put the phones away and soaked up the magic. The bottom of the kayak under your feet looks like a ship from Star Wars jumping into Hyperspace or lightspeed when you're paddling quickly - so incredible. The kayaks were comfortable and easy to paddle, so don't be afraid if you're a beginner or have never kayaked before. I really only got wet up to my mid-thighs while getting in and out of the boats. After an hour of pure amazement, we returned to the shore and boarded the short bus for the return trip. Again, ROUGH. But you can tell the driver is experienced and doing his very best! My only regret here was that we did not get to tip David, as our bags were back with Rafael. I hope he knows how appreciated he was!! From the short bus, we met up with Rafael and got back on the sprinter van and headed straight to the ferry port. If you have time here, I suggest changing out of your swim gear, as it is not much fun sitting in wet clothes for 2+ hours on the ferry and for the ride back to SJ. I think the ferry had restrooms you could use to change as well, but I didn't get up from my seat to go check. Once we got back to the ferry port on the main island, it was about 45 minutes/1 hour back to SJ. Here is where I really need to give Rafael some major kudos! My husband fell asleep on the drive back and accidentally left his cell phone in the van. Rafael was SO kind and found the phone for us that night, even though it was past midnight, and kept in constant contact with us that night and all the next day until we could meet up and get the phone back from him. Rafael absolutely went above and beyond for us, and we are so so grateful. The whole iVentures team and all their partners were fabulous, knowledgeable, punctual, and professional. Cannot recommend them enough! Book your trip to the BioBay ASAP!!!!!

We will visit one or the other depending on itinerary timing and sea weather conditions. 1-hour Half-moon-shaped Sun Bay Beach has it all: palm-lined sand, clear turquoise waters, sparse crowds, and pretty much all the facilities a beach-goer could want. As one of the most accessible beaches on Vieques — as well as the only beach offering public facilities — it’s a popular option for day-trippers to the island. The water is calm, with only a few gentle waves, so it’s an ideal beach for swimming, particularly at the far eastern end.
