The weather didn’t cooperate and we caught Kilauea between episodes, but we enjoyed our day with Thia who taught us everything we needed to know about volcanoes

We (family of three) undertook this excursion by means of an introduction to the Island of Hawai'i. Our guide for the day was Thia, who was excellent. The combined group size of us plus another family of four meant for a comfortable trip, and the Mercedes Sprinter van happily accommodated us all. It was a hot afternoon, and the vehicle air conditioning was welcome. The seats themselves were not especially wide or luxurious - think upmarket coach seats - however there was sufficient room. A vehicle any fuller would have been less comfortable. Thia was an excellent driver, a wealth of knowledge, and was obviously passionate about her island. She kept up a constant commentary as we drove, and answered all questions put to her. A ready supply of snacks and drinks was available. All the stops on the trip were not heavily peopled, which meant for a fairly relaxing schedule; and the flexibility built into the schedule, whereby the group was not bound to rigid timeframes, meant everyone felt they had seen and made the most of every stop. Unfortunately the volcano did not put on much of a show, however the glow of lava bubbling up was evident, albeit at quite a distance. The dinner at Kilauea Lodge was held in a pleasant atmosphere, however the food was not of high standard, and the fish dishes were especially dry. From this point on, the trip was pretty much in darkness, so nothing was seen as we drove around, although Thia kept up a running commentary about what we would be seeing if it were light, and made recommendations for places to visit. Pretty much the whole second half of this tour is in darkness, so be prepared for that. The video played on the coach during the second half of the trip was informative. Thia returned us to our accommodation at 11.45pm after a big day, we all having enjoyed the trip and learned plenty about the island. This is not a cheap excursion and would be difficult with children, but it is virtually 12hrs long and includes many features which probably make it reasonable value for money.

Guide and driver Paul made it all happen. He was patient with the group and knew so much about the island and Kilauea. We saw so many wonderful sights. The ride was pleasant.
