Edward’s a fantastic tour guide/host/driver; really elevated the entire experience. Very knowledgeable, and personable. At the Whitney Plantation the old church-house is a highlight, but the most affecting parts of the “experience” were the metal cages in direct view of the “Big House” and the spiked-heads exhibit emphasizing just how dehumanized these people were. The “Field of Angels” exhibit, memorializing the slave children, unfortunately, was near the end of the numbered path, so left me with little time to absorb it. No doubt it would’ve been equally, or even more affecting. Actually, now that I reflect on the experience, and recall that most, if not all, of the statuary are of children, it’s probably the focus of the entire tour. I couldn’t say for certain, my little handheld didn’t seem sync’d with the number-signs along the path, so after a couple confusing narrations, I gave up on it; especially since it was repeating stuff I had just read inside. I’m sure the prepared material would’ve illuminated the landmarks, but it’s also nice to allow the space to speak for itself. 2.5 to 3 hours might be a better estimate of the time needed at Whitney (skipping the inside, written portion wil reduce that a bit).

Unfortunately, I was never picked up for my tour. After waiting for close to one hour at the pick up stop a Viator operator was finally able to reach the tour operator to find out that my reservation was not in the system due to weekend hours. I could have gone with somebody else and still see the plantation…Disappointing.

Our driver, Edward, was the best. He was very informed about NOLA history and had a terrific personality, as well. He made the trip to and from the Whitney very enjoyable.
