What You'll Get
The tour meets at 9:30am at an award-winning cafe' in the heart of the French Quarter. After giving you the brief history of New Orleans, your guide will get to the subject at hand: food. This is the tour you want to take on your first day in New Orleans! It is not a tasting tour, which allows us to cover more ground, more topics, and make unsolicited food recommendations. This is a small-group tour, which creates a more comfortable, personalized experience.
You will learn who the people were who created the famous cuisine of New Orleans and how the dishes evolved. As you walk, you will learn the history of gumbo, po-boys, jambalaya, pralines, muffalettas, beignets, cafe' au lait, crawfish etouffee', alligator sauce piquante, blackened redfish, calas, red beans and rice, boudin, bananas Foster, oysters Rockefeller, and bread pudding, just to name a few. You will also learn the difference between Cajun and Creole, how to order like a local, and all about the contributions of the Sicilians, Croatians, French, Spanish, Africans, Natives, Irish and Germans to our cuisine. You will pass the most famous restaurants in our city and your new friend in New Orleans will tell you the incredible stories behind them, which are as juicy as a Louisiana strawberry!
The walking part of the tour ends approximately 11:30am in the French Market, where your guide can direct you to any number of great dining options in the immediate area. But the learning does not end when the walking does: your guide will give you their personal list of what the best dishes are in New Orleans and where to find them.
