Pass By: Harlem, 110th to 150th streets, New York City, NY
Discover the birthplace of jazz on a walking tour of Harlem, and experience the soulful sounds that the area has come to be known for.
Your guide will take you across 125th Street, before a lovely stroll along Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard, named for the community rights activist and representative to Harlem in the House of Representatives. Head to the Historic Mount Morris Park District, home to breathtaking unaltered streets of late nineteenth-century brownstone buildings and institutions representing the eclectic styles of the Gilded Age.
The sounds of Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis - to name just a few - live on in Harlem, and every Tuesday afternoon, the neighborhood hosts some of today’s most talented musicians in a musical tribute of epic proportions. Surround yourself in the cool vibrations of jazz at a concert that is pure nurture for the mind, body and soul.
The series is directed by Craig Harris, trombonist, composer, longtime Harlem resident, and a major figure in the Harlem jazz scene since 1976. He has performed with some of the genre's most important figures throughout the USA and abroad.
