Stop At: Paia
Paia, Hawaii
This is the coolest town in all of Hawaii. This is where we meet. Sometimes we do a stroll through town before we hit the Road to Hana, sometimes we take a stroll after we complete the tour. Either way we meet up and end the tour in this cool little hippy/surfer town that is the Heart of Maui's North Shore. Each tour is different, we do not have an exact schedule. After more than 20 years of being a tour guide it is obvious that each and every group is going to be different, so we do our very best to tailor each and every tour to the guests on the tour on any given day. The first thing we will do here in Paia is walk into the health food store so I can offer to buy you a cup of coffee, a pineapple and some banana bread, all included in the price of the tour. You can use the restroom here before we hit the road. This is a great way to start the tour, it is a great place for people watching, and a great place to stock up for the day should you want anything that we do not provide..

Stop At: Makawao
Makawao, Hawaii
Makawao is a 7 mile drive up Baldwin Avenue from the town of Paia, it is our first stop along the way. If the famous Bakery (T. Komoda Store) is open then we will treat you to a donut on a stick or a Guava Malasada, we will treat you to both if you are up for eating 2 donuts. This is a cute little cowboy town with a rich and long history of Cattle Ranching. There are dozens of shops that sell jewelry, clothing, art and food. The town also has public restrooms, so in case you did not get to go in Paia you'll be able to make up for it here in Makawao. We encourage our guests to take a lap and do some shopping, typically we are here for about 15-20 minutes. But since we tailor all of our tours to each individual group we sometimes stay here up to an hour. Usually 30 minutes covers it all, and if you're not ready to hit the road by then we will come and convince you to save your money and utilize your time for the day ahead.

Stop At: Kula
Kula, Hawaii
After leaving Makawao we head up the mountain further in elevation into the community of Kula. The views are incredible in Kula, and at anytime you can simply ask us to stop so we can all get out, take in the view and capture a few photographs. Kula also now has a CVS, so if you missed the 2 previous bathroom stops you'll have another chance here. There are also a large number of food trucks and a brewery near the CVS should you wish to stop and check it all out. This is also where the best farmers market on Maui takes place every Saturday. So, if we are running a Saturday Tour you will get to experience the coolest farmers market on Maui. Even if you don't want to buy anything from this Farmers Market it is still worth checking out. When we leave this area we get back on the Kula Highway and head towards KeoKea, Maui, Hawaii.

Stop At: Keokea
Keokea, HI 96790
KeoKea is a great place to stop along the way towards Maui's beautiful backside. It is easy to see that this town once was a very busy place because it has two gas stations. I like to walk into the local general stores that seem to be trapped in time so my guests can see all of the old appliances, signs and fixtures. These stores do not sell anything worthy, but they sure are neat to walk through and view. In this same area is Grandma's Coffee House, the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee, a latte, some baked goods or even a full on breakfast if you feel like eating. This one is on you though. By this time I have already bought Pineapple, Banana Bread and Coffee for anyone who wanted it. I also keep a cooler stocked with bottled water and gatorade for every tour. Plus I have snacks for everyone that include Maui Potato Chips, Kind Bars and Fruit Snacks. There are also restrooms at this stop. And Oprah has a famous plantation home here, if you want to see it we can cruise by.

Stop At: Kaupo
Kaupo, Hawaii
Ulupalakua is home to the Maui Winery and a really cool ranch store that serves Elk Burgers. If you want any wine or food you are more than welcome to buy it for yourself, but please do not drink any alcohol on the tour. The grounds of the winery are absolutely stunning and well worth your time to take a stroll and check out all of the old plantation style living quarters that still stand today. This is also where King David Kalakaua spent most of his time on Maui, when he was not on Oahu. The owners of the plantation that is now the winery used to throw lavish parties and invite Maui's elite to play on the weekends. The winery has preserved King David's room and visitors are permitted to go inside and check it out. It is pretty to cool to see where the King stayed, read the plaques and many news articles that are framed throughout the main building. There are also restrooms here should you need to use them.

Stop At: Alelele Falls
Kaupo is not what is once was, which was a heavily populated area of the island that many Hawaiians Habituated prior to Westerners making their way to the islands. The views are absolutely stunning though. On the right side you will have views of the Big Island, both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. One is the tallest mountain on the planet and the other is the largest mountain on the planet, that is if you measure them from their base at the sea floor. I have 4 core stops that I like to hit on this stretch of road. The first is a pull out that offers stunning views of a huge gulch that was formed by millennia of lava and water flow. The 2nd is an exotic little area that leads us down to a secluded black sand beach with a cave that is very impressive. The 3rd is a forest of Keawe Trees at Sea Level, many refer to this are as "Thunder Beach" due to the sound of the rocks rolling on top of each other that is caused by Ocean Surge. The 4th is my friends house that lets us use his restroom.

Stop At: Laulima Farm
Hana Highway, Kipahulu, Hawaii
This may possibly be the best waterfall in all of Maui. The waterfall is a short hike, roughly 10 minutes through an amazing and pristine Hawaiian Forest. The trail is easy but it is not for everyone, so nobody has to feel pressured to make the hike. There just so happens to be a black sand beach here too. The stream created by the 80 foot waterfall leads all the way to the ocean, so there is plenty to see and do if you elect to not make the hike to the waterfall. However if you do decide to check out the waterfall you will not be disappointed. There is rarely anyone else around, and it is absolutely perfect for swimming, sun bathing and posing for that Instagram Photo you need so badly. The hike back to the falls is full of native trees and plants, including Lau Hala Trees, Awapuhi and Ti Leaf Plants. It is breathtaking, the kind of hike you never want to end. Easy, flat and just one small stream to cross.

Hamoa Beach, Hana, HI 96713
This is one of my favorite places in all of Maui. Just the coolest little organic farm that has been in operation for decades. They serve fresh coffee and fruit plates here should you want to try some of there tasty treats that are grown on site. They also grow their own popcorn, which is the best I have ever had in my life. I will buy a bag and share it with you, but I know you'll be asking for another from the person working the counter. This place also has a little walking path that I will guide you around that is loaded with exotic trees and fruits. It is only a 10 minute walk, so by the time we complete the loop our popcorn will be ready, along with any fruit plate you may have decided to order. They also sell honey that they harvest themselves, they will even open a coconut with a machete for you, give you a bamboo straw and you can drink the milk out of a coconut. Then they will cut it open and give you the meat of the coconut to eat. That all comes at a cost, but worth it.

Hawaii
An incredible Salt and Pepper Colored Beach with crystal clear water and amazing body surfing conditions. If you do not know how to body surf then I will be happy to show you how to catch a few waves. You're also welcome to just lounge on the beach, nobody has to get in the ocean, but it is so enticing I think you're gonna go for it. I'll bring a big throw blanket and towels, along with drinks and snacks for everyone while we are here at this beach considered Maui's best beach. This is also a great place to watch surfers if the surf is up. This East Maui beach stretches 100 feet wide within a 1,000-foot crescent wrapping around turquoise blue waters. This beach is all natural, no life guards, no resorts, just nature and people. There are fresh water showers here which are great because the sand really sticks to you here. Earnest Hemingway called this the most beautiful beach in the Pacific. He may be right, there are not many that compare to its greatness.

Stop At: Hana
Hana, Hawaii
A red sand beach in Homoa Village that is picture perfect and great for a swim. It is actually just a 5 minute drive from Hamoa Beach, the beach we would have just left. This beach is dominated by a huge, red, steep cliff that creates a dramatic visual scene. The red color of this beach comes from the cinder cone hill (Ka Iwi o Pele,) which means “bones of Pele” in Hawaiian. The waves here can be perfect for body surfing, but the surge can be way too much to attempt getting in at times. I'll be sure to check the conditions when we arrive so you are well informed. Near the parking area is a world-famous Huli-Huli Chicken vendor! This Hawaiian style BBQ chicken is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. If you want to eat lunch here then by all means, do not hesitate to grab some food, this one is on you if you want it. There is a really cool off shore island that stands about 150 feet tall, and it roughly a half mile off shore. It is stunning to look at but not accessible.

Stop At: Red Sand Beach - Kaihalulu Beach
Uakea Rd, Kaihalulu Bay, Hana, Hawaii
Hana is a 4,500-acre area previously owned by the Unna Brothers who, in the 1800s, raised sugar cane. In 1935, the area was bought by Paul Fagan who began raising cattle in the area. Today the Hana area is owned by a group of local and mainland investors. There is quite a bit of stuff to do here, typically we start off at the food trucks where everyone is welcome to purchase their own lunch if you choose to do so. The town also has a sit down Restaurant that is pretty good for being in Hana, which feels like the middle of nowhere compared to the resort areas on Maui. There are two general stores and a couple of little shops we can check it you're interested in doing so. They have been around for a long time, and they are sight to see. The town also has public restrooms, a black sand beach and a red sand beach. We will be checking out Both Hana Bay, which is the black sand beach and you will have the option to make the trek to Red Sand Beach.

Stop At: Hanawi Falls
Hana Hwy 360, Hana, Hawaii
Absolutely out of this world, the most exotic beach in all of Hawaii! Kaihalulu Beach, better known as Red Sand Beach, is a natural marvel forged by volcanoes and hidden away on Maui’s famous Road to Hana. It is one of the most unusual beaches throughout all of the world. The swimming is great here, sometimes there are excellent cliff jumping conditions. I will carry a throw sheet for everyone to sit on, bring towels, drinks and snacks so that we can stay and hang out for a while if you choose to do so. The hike to the beach is not easy, but if you're with me and you're up for trying it I can promise to keep you safe. If you’re looking for the perfect photo to turn into art work for your home, this is the place to get it. This secluded cove has some of the most dramatic color contrasts you can find. Tropical blue green waters with white waves pushing up against jagged dark lava rock. Rusty red sands and cliffs next to lush green vegetation. It is photo worthy beyond words.

Stop At: Wailua Falls
Hana Highway, just past Koali Ranch Cottage, Hana, Hawaii
A beautiful waterfall right on the road that is a must see! A great place for swimming, hiking, taking pictures and cliff jumping. One of the best places to view its magnificence is right off Hanawi Stream’s bridge, which, completed in 1926 (and comprising one of eighty bridges constructed between 1908 and 1940), emphasizes the sense that one is traveling back in time the deeper they voyage into Hana. With a couple of narrow pull-offs before and after the bridge, we can pop out of our car, snap pics, and listen to the roar of its plunge. Adventurous travelers, meanwhile, ought to trek to the pool to view the erosion created by the torrent, or hop into the water for a swim. It is cold, but so very worthy. Some locals refer to this place as Frog Pond, or Pump House. Hanawi Stream is part of a larger system. At one time 450 million gallons of water poured into the tunnels and ditches of The East Maui Irrigation Company per day. Most of which went to water the Sugar Cane Fields.

Stop At: Wailua Valley State Wayside Park
14560 Hana Hwy, Kula, Hawaii
A huge 80 foot waterfall that is great for swimming. Wailua Falls gracefully cascades 80 feet through a lush setting in the surrounding vegetation just feet from the road. There is a short path to the base of the falls, here we can take a dip and float on our backs, staring up at the huge waterfall is amazing, safe and what dreams are made of. The parking lot usually has some vendors set up, they are typically selling trinkets for you to bring back home. Some of them are worthy, others not so much, but if you feel like supporting a guy tying to make a living at a waterfall then that is up to you. Things are pretty cheap here, so you wouldn't be breaking the bank. The place can get crowded, but the crowds come and go pretty fast, it is worth stopping and taking a dip, you'll love it. Definitely one of my favorite waterfalls in all of Hawaii, it is just so conveniently located close to the road and easily accessible via 3 minute walk.

Stop At: Ke‘anae Point
Hawaii
One of the best views in all of Hawaii! Insane Mountain Views with several waterfalls on one side, and then majestic ocean views on the other side, you won't know where to look. The views are easily accessible via a set of stairs that take about 30 seconds to ascend, well worth it. At the top of the stairs you will have a perfect view of Wailua Town. A picture perfect Hawaiian Village that has a large and prevalent church along with banana farms and Taro Fields that are used to produce Poi. After you are done facing the ocean, you can turn around and be impressed by the views and waterfalls of Wailua Valley. You'll be stunned into silence at first glance, and then again when you turn around and see the 2nd view. I have a really cool photo that I love doing at this stop for all of my guests, I am sure you will love it too. There are views of Ke‘anae Valley, Ko‘olau Gap in Haleakala’s rim, and of Wailua Village. I consider this to be the best view on The Road to Hana.

Stop At: Honomanu
Hana Highway, Hana, Hawaii
A small village on the Road to Hana that offers a great place to dip in the ocean by jumping off a little man made dock that was once a navy pier. The town has public restrooms and it is also home to Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread, although they will most likely be closed you can still get a pic by their famous sign. This is probably the coolest place in all of Maui to watch the Ocean Waves crash into the shoreline rocks. This is the only Peninsula on Maui, created by a flow of lava that happened only in this area. Historically, Ke’anae has been a taro producing Hawaiian village, and much of the land is in taro lo’i today. It is told that the dirt was brought down here basket-by-basket. This story may very well be true since the area is young lava rock, created quite recently (geologically speaking) in a massive flow from Haleakala. On April 1, 1946 the area was almost completely destroyed by a tsunami generated by an 8.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska.

Hana Hwy., Between Mile Markers 9 And 10, Hawaii
Just another epic black sand beach! This one has a fresh water stream that meets the saltwater. Probably the best place on the planet to skip rocks. I challenge anyone to put their rock skipping skills to the test. Where the fresh water meets the ocean there is a great place to take a dip and feel the different water temperatures as the fresh and salt water are not mixing together. You can also swim in the ocean here. I will break out the blankets, towels, drinks and snacks if you want. Typically by this time of day my guests are beginning to get tired and are ready to keep driving in order to get back to Paia. That is all totally up to you, when you book this tour you get your guide for the entire day, we do not have a set schedule, unless you have given us one that you want us to abide by. I also have great pics that I love to take at this location, 2 of them, again, I know you will love them!

Hana Highway, , Paia, Hawaii
2 amazing waterfalls, one is perfect for cliff jumping, the other one is a 15 minute hike to get to the bigger, 80 foot waterfall, if you're up for it. The best thing about these falls is that they are right on the road, super easy to access and usually very clean as long as it has not rained the day before. The small easily accessible waterfall makes for great pictures and a cool swim to rinse off the salt water from the previous stop. To explain: Waikamoi Falls is made up of two waterfalls. The smaller of the two is in plain sight from the road, no hiking required. The second waterfall is higher up the mountain. The pool at this 2nd, much larger waterfall is accessible for the right person, it is not for everyone. Just like everything else on this tour, it is tailored to you. To access the second, larger Waikamoi Falls, we hike upstream, its so beautiful. Both locations have water flow year-round but is much fuller and more beautiful after a rainstorm.
