I have been an avid NMAAM goer since its opening- really, I supported the museum BEFORE it opened, and I have been a regular patron and visit at least 2-3 a year. I make it a point to take all of my family and out-of-town guests routinely. I love the history and how the music connects to the African American experience and shapes the entire culture. I could spend hours and hours here, and the interactive activities are fun for all ages. The exhibits change from time to time, but the only thing that I totally miss is the 360 film of Prince at the Super Bowl (fingers crossed that that will come back!)

The National Museum of African American Music will stand as an international iconic cultural museum dedicated to the vast contributions African Americans have made in music. It is to be the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. Being built in Nashville, the museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.

My wife and I visited Nashville this past weekend to celebrate her birthday, and one of the experiences she was most excited about was visiting the National Museum of African American Music. I purchased tickets through Viator about a week in advance, expecting we’d have ample time to fully explore and enjoy the exhibits. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the museum around 1:30 PM, we were informed that we only had about 45 minutes to view the exhibits due to the museum closing early that day. We were told that the space had been booked on short notice, which required an early shutdown. While staff did mention that we could return the next day for free, that wasn’t an option for us since we were leaving town the following day. We were also unaware ahead of time that admission was free due to MLK weekend, and more importantly, we were not notified in advance that the museum would be closing early. The museum officially opened at noon, so arriving at 1:30 PM did not seem unreasonable. Because of the time constraint, the experience felt rushed, and we weren’t able to fully engage with or appreciate the exhibits as intended. This was disappointing, especially given the significance of the museum and the anticipation surrounding the visit. With better communication—whether through Viator or direct notification about the early closure—we could have adjusted our plans accordingly. The museum itself is meaningful and impactful, and I truly wish we’d had the time to experience it properly. I hope future visitors are given clearer advance notice so they can fully enjoy everything the museum has to offer.

This was a powerful and enjoyable experience. Definitely recommend! 10 out of 10!! danced, I laughed and I cried. This museum traces the history of African-Americans pre-slavery to present. You will learn so much and you will be singing along.

What a beautiful experience! This museum really immerses you in the feeling of the history of black artists in music through the literal decades. All at once, you feel transported to a distant time and space and really get the feeling of being in a musical experience. They have all types of immersive experiences and you can dance and sing your heart away. I have never quite been to a museum such as this one. It was just wonderful and I didn't know what to expect but I was truly blown away at the thought and consideration that went into its curation.
