The first stop is at the Breakers mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Finally, take a 2-hour tour of the Elms, a National Historic Landmark that was the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. He made his fortune in the coal industry and would call upon Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to fashion a house after the mid-18th-century French Chateau d’Asnieres outside Paris. Construction was completed in 1901 at a cost of roughly $1.4 million.
