What You'll Get
The tour kicks off under the massive Brooklyn War Memorial. So come early (you’re up anyway), bring your container of coffee, bagel with a smear and have a good old-fashioned Brooklyn Coffee Klatch with a native Brooklynite (your tour guide). The detailed, foolproof directions make it easy to go the one extra subway stop to enjoy walking the bridge from Brooklyn To Manhattan. This is generally acknowledged as the optimal way to appreciate the Manhattan Skyline. The tour officially gets underway at 7:30 AM as you stroll in the early morning sun to the nearby Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway.
Before you even reach the first great stone tower, you’re going to have some awesome views of Brooklyn Heights, the BQE, Diamond Reef, Governors Island and Upper New York Bay. Thanks to the use of Personal Listening Devices you’ll hear everything your guide has to say about the history and construction of this iconic bridge. You’ll also learn what it was like to grow up in Brooklyn and Manhattan in the 50s and 60s.
The only other people on the bridge this early are Brooklyn residents heading to work in Manhattan, so you pretty much have the bridge to yourself. A rarity these days. The closer you get to the Manhattan side the more impressive the skyline becomes. Keep your cameras and phones handy.
You’ll finally arrive on the Manhattan side of the bridge under the looming Municipal Building, 1 Police Plaza, the Woolworth Building and the elegant New York by Gehry building. Oh, be sure to ask your guide why it’s the best building in NYC to retire in.
As most Bridge Walkers continue into City Hall Park you’ll slip down an almost forgotten stairwell to emerge under the Brooklyn Bridge. This road less traveled takes you through a unique section of Manhattan and past the cavernous stone towers of the Brooklyn Bridge. You may wonder why the towers have windows.
One of the most interesting spots under the bridge is the site of America’s first Presidential Mansion. The tour works its way over to the banks of the East River where you’ll be able to take some beautiful photos of the bridge from this unique vantage point.
The Brooklyn Bridge tour ends here just steps away from the South Street Seaport. You can, of course, choose the combo tour and join us for the Hamilton Musical Walking Tour (19336P2). A song-by-song stroll through Hamilton’s rise and eventual fall as New York’s foremost Founding Father. This tour is designed for folks who have already seen or plan to see the 11 Tony Award winning Broadway production or those just addicted to the cast album.
