I've been on a wide array of tours on naval ships - and in multiple countries no less - but the Machine Spaces tour we took on the Iowa was definitely one of the best! The guide was VERY knowledgeable and communicated the information very well. As our tour group was open to all the "If you want, I can talk about 'x' or 'y' topics" our guide offered us, the tour was well over the advertised time - making everyone quite happy! For sure, we got our moneys worth! There was scarcely any space on the ship that we did not get into - with the exception of the gun houses (that's a different tour ... and I've seen those on other ships anyway). Among the areas we hit, and had good explanations/stories of, were the: bridge, CIC, dental, medical, communications, auxiliary steering, engine room, boiler room, electrical room, anchor locker, paint shop, machine shop, enlisted quarters, officers quarters, captains quarters, damage control, escape hatches, as well as the upper decks and all the items attached thereto - i.e. 5" guns, Harpoons, Tomahawks, etc. Some members of our group had served on the ship as well, and the interaction between them and our guide made the ship come much more alive as well. And I think that the recurring phrase coming from them all was "Mind your head!" as we went thru the hatches along "Broadway"/"I-95". I would ABSOLUTELY recommend the Machine Spaces tour ... and DO take a change of clothes ... as if you have the same luck as us, you will be carrying the sweet scent of Bunker Oil as you leave the ship for your evening activities.

Our Guide was fantastic! Charles (a retired US Navy Captain was very knowledgeable about President Roosevelt's secret trip on the Iowa during WWII andkept us engaged with his questions at e phase of the tour. He was awesome. My father a Korean war vet had a great time, not only learning about the secrete mission but also reminiscing with the Captain about his time in the Navy. Thank you Charles!
