Dugan was amazing with historical knowledge and the ability to answer questions appropriately. Recommend this as a must do. If it is in the colder season layer and bundle up because you will want to give your full attention.

Trace the steps of the Black Portlanders who moved our city, state, and country closer to the ideals of freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality. Maine’s earliest settlements couldn’t have existed without Black labor, skill, and insight. You'll meet the Black Yankees who founded Maine communities, overturned slavery statewide, drove our maritime industries, gained political influence, crossed color boundaries, and expanded Mainers’ rights in the modern era. Stepping on granite cobblestones crooked with age — that once saw footfalls from national heroes like Frederick Douglass — you’ll pass storefronts once home to Black-owned barbershops where abolitionists whispered intelligence to Underground Railroad conductors. Enjoy 2 hours of entertaining and enlightening historical narration over a 1.5-mile route. Owner and guide, Dugan Murphy, dug through the archives to present an amazing constellation of stories left out of most tours. TripAdvisor named him Portland's #1 guide!

During a walk of about two and a quarter hours, we got a rich history lesson about Portland’s many Black citizens, past and present. Dugan has done a lot of intimate research into people whose names I’ve never heard (and a few I had). I’ve lived and worked in Portland for over 15 years, and this tour was packed with information I never heard before. Thank you!

Tour guide was phenomenal. Excellent research, very engaging storyteller. The pace worked well, with several opportunities to take a seat if desired. The last part of the tour was a rather steep uphill climb but paced well. Tour ended about a 15 minute walk from the start, so just plan on that extra time. I would def take another tour from this group - maybe even the same one again!

Dugan!s tours are amazing. The first tour I did with him was so amazing and informative, my sister and I went back for a second tour the next day. I learned so much about Portland history and Dugan makes it so interesting. He can answer any question you come up with. If you are visiting Portland definitely take one of these tours!!! They are the best.

This was an absolutely phenomenal experience. My wife and I both enjoyed this tour so much. I grew up in the area, have been away for years, and recently moved back. I had never learned so much of what Dugan covers on this tour. My wife is from the Dominican Republic, and she appreciated learning this local history that also connects with larger African history. Dugan is energetic, outgoing, knowledgeable, and knows how to communicate information in an engaging way. It’s clear that he put a ton of work into researching the people, places, events, and issues he covers. The tour distance and pacing is also well done. We cannot recommend this tour enough!
