just a wonderful tour! the history of NOLA is buried right there! Our guide was a hoot and we appreciated his knowledge of NOLA history particularly the history of the canal and the relationships between the business history --movers and shakers--and the graveyard

When you tour with non-profit Save Our Cemeteries you are helping to preserve and protect the historic cemeteries of New Orleans. Our tours are small and historically accurate. Lake Lawn Metairie cemetery was named by Forbes as one of “America’s Best Cemeteries.” This picturesque cemetery boasts some of the grandest funerary architecture and sculpture in the US. Live oaks surround greek temples, gothic and Islamic style tombs, obelisks, and marble monuments with beautiful ironwork and stained glass. The resting place of many of New Orlean's most influential and notorious citizens, Metairie Cemetery holds the graves of over 9,000 people on 65 landscaped acres. Nine Louisiana governors, seven New Orleans mayors, 49 kings of Carnival, and three Confederate generals rest alongside madams, brothel owners, bandleaders Louis Prima and Al Hirt, vampire writer Anne Rice, and former Saints and Pelicans’ owner Tom Benson. An easy walk. Wheelchair accessible.

Would have preferred a smaller group. Maybe in a large golf cart instead of walking. The tour guide was lovely and knowledgeable, but sometimes hard to hear.

So much to learn. Loved the knowledgable guie, the amazing stories, and hanging in the cemetary for a few hours! If you like history, this is a great way to see it in a different light.

SOC and Preservation Resource Center are engaged in efforts to preserve the special heritage of New Orleans. The tour led by Glenn Schiro was excellent. He is a lifelong New Orleanian and has a tremendous amount of knowledge about New Orleans history and culture. Take the tour!

This is a long, leisurely walking tour full of history and respectful anecdotes. No ghost stories or melodrama. Plan to go early in the day when the sun isn't high, although the cemetery is mostly flat you want to take advantage of as much shade as possible.
