What You'll Get

For our first stop, we'll be visiting Fore River Brewing Company. Fore River Brewing Company opened in South Portland in early 2016, and they are already the oldest of three breweries in the city. John and TJ - two friends and avid home-brewers - teamed up with Alex the property owner (who had just sold his landscaping business) to open the brewery. They worked for months to hand craft and perfect their beers and the beautiful tasting room, which has both classic and modern barn elements in the design. Look for an outside beer garden at this spot just across the river from Portland.

The next stop is Maine Mead Works. Founded in 2007 by Ben Alexander, Maine Mead Works strives to reintroduce the world to the oldest of all fermented beverages: a wine made from honey called mead. In collaboration with South African scholar Dr. Garth Cambray, they developed a state-of-the-art continuous fermentation system, bringing mead making into the 21st century. While traditional mead is often heavy and syrupy, you’ll be pleased to find that the team at Maine Mead Works has developed a light, dry, modern take on the formula. Learn about the secret of their success and taste their extensive list of variations, including some invigorating sparkling Ram Island mead blends.

Finally, we will stop at Lone Pine Brewing. After working in the retail side of beer for over a decade, Tom Madden decided that the time was right to break into producing his own beer. A long-time home brewer and Certified Cicerone, he reconnected with his longtime friend John Paul who had been working in the music industry in California. Together, they opened Lone Pine in March of 2016 in a former countertop production space in Portland’s East Bayside, and they are churning out popular hoppy ales for retail sale and enjoyment in their elevated tasting room.

At the end of the tour, we’ll be dropping you back at Old Port Spirits and Cigars, which is a terrific place to continue exploring downtown Portland for the rest of your evening if you desire!
