Don't worry about your shoes, you will be taking them off to get through a bit of muck to get to the kayak. Fascinating tour across the bay experiencing the wonder of the dinoflagellates! Late start was a bummer, but flat tires are just a risk on Vieques I guess. Guide was friendly and knowledgeable - enjoyed his explanations and availability to answer any and all questions. Do try to experience the Bio Bay, you will be happy you did.

Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay excursions are guided in solid and semi clear bottom kayaks through the glowing waters of Mosquito Bay, located on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Mosquito Bay is the brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the world! Children age five and older are welcome to join the tour with a parent or adult, so long as a ticket is purchased for each participant. To do our tour, guests MUST BE aware that Vieques is an island apart from Puerto Rico so you will need to take a ferry from Ceiba or a plane from San Juan or Ceiba and stay overnight at the island. Our excursions depart nightly at 7pm and 9pm. We do not operate during full moon. Book now to paddle the GLOW with Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay excursions, where the Bio Bay is the star!

Points of Interest

Stop At: Bahia BioluminiscenteThis excursion is located on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. In order to participate in our tour, an overnight stay on Vieques is required. Vieques is a separate island off of the main island of Puerto Rico. You will need to take a plane or ferry from the main island of Puerto Rico to reach Vieques, and you will need to arrange separate ground transportation because you will not be able to bring a rental car on the ferry with you. Because we only offer tours at night so that our clients can experience the glow of the bay, even if you take our earliest tour, you will not be back to our meeting point with enough time to get on a ferry or a plane back to the main island on the same day. Our guides will meet you in Esperanza directly across from Rainbow Realty (278 Calle Flamboyan). Roundtrip from the meeting point, the excursion is 2 hours, time on the bay about 1.5 hours, weather permitting. We provide transportation from the meeting point to the Bio Bay entrance and back. Cool and unique experience on Vieques. The moon definitely affects the visibility of the bioluminescence though so if it’s a full moon or close to one, it will make it harder to see anything. We went with a crescent moon and were able to see some bioluminescence when making movement with our paddles or hands in the water, which was really cool. It wasn’t too much paddling so it was not that strenuous but you’ll have to do moderate paddling. The bottoms of the kayaks are clear as well so you could see some bioluminescence under the kayak. In all the tour took 2-2.5 hours from pick up to drop off. There were multiple other groups there at the loading zone to get in kayaks but the bay was big enough that there was plenty of space after that. You will have to walk through calf-high mud to get to the kayak loading area. There’s no way around this mud and they do recommend you leave your shoes in the car because of it. So you’ll walk over barefoot with a life jacket and paddle and then board the 2-person kayaks. We only got a little wet but didn’t wear swim suits, the bottom of your legs will get wet from the mud and then walking in the water to get in the kayak though. We also left all our stuff in the van, which is what they recommended.

The tour was such a fun adventure and the tour guides made it so amazing! Lots of laughs and super insightful facts about the bioluminescence bay.

Awesome experience! Go when there's a new moon, etc. research it. Our tour had the best conditions, so thankful for it. The water was lower during the dry season so the movement on top of the water was more active, to be able to witness more of the bioluminescence effect. The fish were active, it made for more bioluminescence and towards the end coming back in it rained a little bit which made more of a show for us! Blue light sparks were hitting up from each rain drop that hit the water surface. Also, not everyone had a clear bottom kayak but we did and it was a wonderful extra to see the blue light show below us as we paddled through the water, so cool! Also, make sure you splash your paddles and run your hands through the water, wow! Highly recommend!

The tour was a little disappointing and it felt disorganized. The guides were about 20-30 minutes late and we tried calling them multiple times and they picked up on our fifth try and they didn’t even apologize for being late. They had us following one person in the kayaks and then told ja we could go on our own for a little bit and then a different person showed up and told us to follow them instead without any confirmation from our original guide Bioluminescence was very pretty and they get some points because they brought a tarp to cover the moonlight and that made us see it better but it was hard to fully enjoy it with everything else that was going on
