Chicago has a long history of organized crime and was famously home to the American mafia figure Al Capone. In 1850, Chicago had a population of 80,000 people, but the city had no police force. Because Chicago was built over a swamp, mud constantly oozed from beneath the city's wooden streets. It was decided the whole city would be 'mudjacked' 10 feet (3 metres) and the city would rest on stilts, with stones at the base. This marked the beginning of the free-wheeling crime sub-culture that overtook Chicago, and culminated with Al Capone's prohibition era reign as the criminal prince of Chicago's organized crime. Join us as we deep dive the infamous history of gangsters in America's heartland on the Gangster Tour of Chicago

Customer Reviews

I booked this tour before the other review and I wish I had waited. Like the other reviewer the address sent us to the back of the church, several other participants were wandering about and we all decided to go to the front of the building and others were also mingling about unsure of what was going on. A young man who had been sitting on the church steps the whole time writing and checking the internet finally came over and introduced himself, we also were not on his list and he supposed it was alright for us to join the tour. The tour started about 15 minutes late and went downhill from their. We started walking and it was only when we stopped for him to read from an A4 handwritten piece of paper I suspect he was writing it on the church steps that he realised we were going in the wrong direction. The tour lasted under 1 hour 30 minutes and we only stopped about 4 times and at those stops he read from the piece of paper and could not answer the simplest of questions. A Chicagoan on the tour said they we had actually passed the same point 4 times from different directions. It seemed to us that this was deliberate to waste time. Do consider very carefully what you want before booking this, there are better tours and books which can tell you more.

Absolute nightmare from the beginning. The directions on the emails said to meet In front of the Holy Name Cathedral on N Wabash Ave. In actuality it was in the front of church on a completely different street. I called 3 times to 800 number, website said tour was cancelled the phone call after 45 minutes got me no where. Once we found other guest we found tour guide, she did not have our name on the list. I showered paper work and she gave a flippant answer like I guess we can come. We started 1/2 late she said tour would last 1 to 1.5 hours. About 15 minutes into the tour it was quite clear she knew absolutely nothing about gangsters the tour or Chicago history. Complete waste of 70.00. Save your money and buy a book.
