The two of us booked horseback rides at Waipi'o in January 2026. We enjoyed the ranch, gentle horses and hospitality. We heard the history of the area and were able to taste many varieties of fruit grown on the property. Some we've never heard of before, very cool. Good horses, comfortable saddles and plenty to see. We rode through several wooded areas, then out to expansive ocean views, and then along fish ponds and many planted crops and fruit trees. We've gone on several other rides on the islands, and this ranked right up at the top. After our ride, we drove to the end of the road to view the beautiful Waiopo Valley and black sand beach.

Ride a guided tour of Waipio On Horseback Ranch, experience a traditional Ahupua’a (Mauka Makai). Horseback through a large coconut orchard, banana groves, and fishponds. We go alongside the historic Hamakua ditch and up into pasture blooming with purple flowers, guava and iron woods. There are baby sheep, horses, and calf. See native animals-wild boar, Hawaiian Ducks, donkeys, etc. Exotic fruits Kuini, such as Abiu, Salak, Mardrono, pitomba, Talisia, and Durio. Perhaps even sample those grown on the property. See the spectacular views, and landscapes, from fertile gardens to sweeping grasslands, and tree canopies. Learn Hawaiian culture and customs. Our guides are knowledgeable on the history of this Hawaiian Ahupa'a, a large socioeconomic, geologic, and climatic subdivision of land. Extending from the mountains to the sea with multiple water sheds. Each Ahupa'a provides wood for shelter and food like fish or taro. Unforgettable Ocean and Mountain Views

Guided horse tour of a traditional Hawaiian Ahupa'a. The tour begins at WOH Ranch, a working livestock ranch and farm operation sharing exclusive views of enchanting Hamakua. This scenic opportunity allows travel through a traditional land division (Ahupua’a) that stretches from the mountain to the ocean and is home to native flora and fauna. Surrounding gardens radiate fertility as you drive alongside fishponds full of Hamakua sunfish on your tour. Dwarf coconuts, breadfruit trees, kukui nut, sugar cane, taro, sweet potato and multiple varieties of heirloom bananas are just some of the plants you will see before riding alongside the historic Hamakua ditch. Our WOH Ranch Tour is ocean-bound; taste salt on the wind and hear waves pound against the sheer cliffs while we cruise under a canopy of ironwood trees near remnants of old Hawaiian settlements. At the ocean, we kick back and relax for a short break to appreciate the stunning Hamakua coastline. On a clear day you can see Maui!

The guides had so much information. It was a wonderful tour of the farm. All the orchards were amazing. Such a big variety of all the stuff they grow. The views were breathtaking. It is a must-see when you go to the big island of Hawaii.

Horseback at Waipio was hands down the best riding we’ve done on the Big Island. I’ve done 3 other— The Valley itself was closed but Patricia took us out on the 600 acre ranch through the most beautiful scenery I’ve seen- jungle streams all the different trees wild cows and horses…… it was amazing absolutely amazing. The ranch dogs and cats, the fruit, the little ranch house, our big beautiful horses, our amazing calm knowledgeable and truly friendly guide Patricia….i just can’t say enough! Stop at the ”most beautiful fruit stand in the world “ because it really is….. expensive yes — long drive yes—- and 100% worth it!

This was super fun, my partner and I’s first time riding a horse. Nia and Micah were great guides and we felt safe with them. They take u about 3-4miles around land full of fruits, water, and wildlife. If you have a history of allergies to animals, I’d take some allergy meds with you. I found out I was allergic, unfortunately. But made it to the end okay and picked up allergy meds after. Still an amazing experience. Would do this again, with allergy meds beforehand.

We thoroughly enjoyed the horseback riding tour of Waipio upland hills and surrounding mountains. Beautiful views, excellent guide (a lovely lady don’t remember her name) She was most gracious and made us all feel comfortable. She is well informed about the history of the island and showed us all the different varieties of plants and trees. This was a safe and pleasant ride we felt very taken care of.
