What You'll Get
Fill your mouth with a one-two tsunami of California's finest wines and Japan's finest miniaturized beef, plus the tongue-rolling joy of saying sommelier, with today's Groupon: for $18, you get three 3 oz. high-end wine pours (a $45 value) escorted by a Kobe-beef slider (a $4 value) from Vinoteque on Melrose, a $49 total value.
The glamorous and sordid come together to form a formidable wine trio: the fabulous 2007 Facets of Gemstone Proprietary Red flexes hints of darkly sweet cherry and currant, but its heart of oak beats strong, while the less aggressive 2007 Hanzell chardonnay—whose 2006 batch was listed by Food & Wine as one of the 50 Wine Classics You Must Try—is pale and alluring with its intoxicating vanilla-honey scent. The 2006 Cain Concept is a luxurious leader, unavailable for purchase to all but the most well connected and powerful, featuring an unbearably ripe blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot. Paired with one blue-cheese-stuffed Kobe slider with sun-dried tomatoes and harissa mayo, the exceptional decadence of the whole affair might compel patrons to swear off all other forms of food and drink.
When a grape is just a small child, its raisin grandparents sit it down and explain that it will one day be squashed underfoot, fermented, and then married to a delicious morsel of food for the benefit of everyone involved. Regale in the tale while lounging in Vinoteque's handsome dining room complete with red high-back chairs perched atop hardwood floors, walls lined with an eclectic collection of mirrors, and minimalist bulbs strung shining from the ceiling. Sidle up to a stone pillar with someone you'd like to impress or press and ferment and pull out all the stops with an unforgettable evening of lovely sips and bites.
