Q&A with Danae Higdon, Owner And Zumba Instructor
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We keep clients motivated by providing a fun, party-like environment and by changing our routines every three weeks, so there is always something new.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
No, because Zumba is exercising in disguise. No one suffers because it's a party, but at the same time, we're getting an intense workout. People come for the party at first, but they keep coming back for the results they get.
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
In Zumba, the music motivates and inspires participants. My class mixes all kinds of rhythms from all over the world to keep everyone exited and to keep them coming back.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We offer a Zumba Beginners Workshop once a month. It is designed for new students who have never done Zumba before, or for those who have come to class and felt lost. You will learn basic steps and combinations for various Latin rhythms, including salsa, cumbia, merengue, reggaeton, and cha cha. We break down each style so that you can get comfortable with the movement, and then we put it all together. The cost os $15 in advance, or $20 at the door.
“It's pretty tough if you've never done Zumba or Salsa/Latin dancing.”
