About Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site
Before Walt Whitman became an iconic poet and a pioneer of free verse, he spent his early years in this home. Whitman was born in this West Hills farmhouse, which Walter Whitman Sr. built himself around 1810. It was later restored in 2001.
A shining example of Long Island craftsmanship, Whitman's birthplace has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998, it was deemed an "American Treasure" by the White House Millennium Council.
Take a tour led by trained tour guides who discuss architecture and lifestyle during the 1820s, the history of the house, and the life of Walt Whitman. Visit the modern visitors center to hear Whitman's actual voice on tape, and view the school desk he used as a teacher on Long Island. Stroll the manicured 1.5 acre grounds and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
