What You'll Get

Maestro James leads the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association in welcoming April with the familiar and beloved Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland. Originally orchestrated for only 13 instruments, Appalachian Spring has become one of the most iconic and inspiring pieces of American music, and the Philharmonic will perform the rich and colorful full orchestra version. Also iconic in capturing the essence of spring is Danish Composer Carl Nielsen's enchanting Springtime in Funen, performed here by the acclaimed NOVA Community Chorus. Funen, the third largest island of Denmark and the composer's birthplace, is the inspiration for this lyrical tribute to the joy of the season of rebirth. And last but not least, the Philharmonic will showcase Robert Schuman's joyful and lyrical Spring symphony, also known as his Symphony #1. This romantic work captures the freshness of spring after the trials of winter. From the first movement, in which spring gracefully unfolds from the cold earth, to the last movement, where the season explodes in its full glory, it's a joy to behold. The music is in full bloom at the Church of the Epiphany in D.C.
