Wine classes allow fans to re-create an episode in the life of everyone's favorite crime-fighting sommelier, Mr. Belvedere, without having to produce a hit ’80s sitcom. Raise a sophisticated glass with today's Groupon: for $32, you get a wine class at Washington Wine Academy (a $68 value). Choose a class focusing on one particular region: New Zealand, Australia, Virginia, South Africa, Chile, Germany, Italy, or Spain. All classes are held in the Wine Academy Education Center, located on the ground floor of the Bennington Luxury Apartments in Crystal City.
Tasting schools are the field briefings of discerning drinkers and toddler-like flavor buds alike, supplying critical information and first-tongue experience. Each class starts off with an instructor-led educational session on the history, major wine-producing areas, and popular grapes of your selected region, followed by a guided tasting and discussion of two white and two red wines. Pairings of Cabot Creamery cheeses are provided, and students get to keep their complimentary Washington Wine Academy wine glass. Though classes don't transmogrify students into master sommeliers, you'll leave your session with a mouth compass better calibrated to navigate nerve-racking dinner dates and nerve-calming breakfasts.
