Sight, the workhorse of the five senses, puts in too many hours keeping man from falling in manholes. Give the most overworked sense a vacation with today's Groupon: a yearlong membership to the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Choose from two membership options:
- For $12, you get an individual membership (a $35 value)
- For $20, you get a dual/family membership (a $50 value)
Admission is always free to the Weatherspoon Art Museum's collection of nearly 6,000 works from primarily post-WWII American artists. With today's deal, both the individual and dual/family memberships entitle you to reciprocal admission to partnering museums, 10% off most gift-shop merchandise, free or discounted admission to special events, and more. After you've watched Alexander Calder's Yellow Sail mobile wiggle wondrously in the breeze and inspected the paint layers on Willem de Kooning's Woman in Weatherspoon's permanent collection, venture to the Lenoir C. Wright Collection of Japanese woodblock prints, the Claribel and Etta Cone Collection of Matisse prints and bronzes, and Entwined, a current exhibit of thread-like and thread-based works. If Weatherspoon's modern and contemporary art doesn't bathe your eyes in the luxurious bubble bath you desire, check out the other partnering museums, such as the Green Hill Center for NC Art, that you can visit with your membership.
Workshops are held monthly; an upcoming one teaches printmaking techniques ($30 members/$40 non-members). Or, see films, listen to artist talks, take tours, and rub shoulders with fellow art enthusiasts until the corduroy rubs off at the Weatherspoon's events. The museum's summer music and film series is "Warhol & Friends"; on July 15th, glimpse Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol ($5 suggested donation) such as the time when he drank red paint after mistaking it for Campbell's tomato soup.
Weatherspoon Art Museum does not have many reviews yet, but it was an Editors' Pick on 10Best. Here's what they said:
- With art pieces such as a bronze sculpture by Matisse and "Woman I" by de Kooning in its collection, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery is quite impressive. – 10Best
