2014 Haunted America Conference
Tragedy struck the Decatur & Arcade Hotel in 1915, when it burned to the ground in a massive fire that claimed two lives. It wasn't the first fire; flames had engulfed the building a decade earlier. This time, however, there was no coming back. The Lincoln Theater was built on the hotel's ruins in 1916, but, like someone who moves into an old garlic shop, the new venue has never been able to to escape the former tenant's past. Over the decades, it's earned a reputation for spectral sightings and other eerie events, all of which make it the perfect venue for the Haunted America Conference.
One thing is certain—the ghosts definitely know how to throw a party. Each year the conference draws in paranormal experts, media personalities, and authors from across America. One mainstay has been Troy Taylor, who has appeared on television and authored more than 100 books on ghosts and other unexplained phenomena. Taylor and his fellow experts lecture on subjects such as ghost hunting, the haunted history of Decatur, and the haunting practices of dead U.S. presidents, leaving room for Q&A sessions with the crowd. The event also drifts miasmically beyond the theater walls to embark on ghost tours and late-night investigations.

The Haunted History Tour recounts some of Chicago's most unusual ghost stories and stops at areas of reported paranormal activity. Other tours prowl sites tied to Al Capone's notorious career and the St. Valentine's Day massacre or grisly crime scenes straight out of the novel Devil in the White City.
