Some spirituals were first sung in the fields, accompanied by only the clank of the hoe and the snap of the whip. Others were born in the chapel, every verse a sermon, every note an altar call. And then there were those that, in one form or another, were always there -- all the way back to Africa itself. Now, a selection of spirituals forms the centerpiece of West Jersey Chamber Music Society's latest concert. Performed at Moorestown's historic First Presbyterian Church, Great Spirituals: Honoring an African-American Musical Tradition features a soul-stirring lineup arranged by musical icons like Moses Hogan, Robert Shaw, Larry L. Fleming and Ken Berg. The West Jersey Chamber Choir and the First Presbyterian Church Choristers join in on this special concert in honor of African American History Month.
