Bistros are remarkable in that they somehow manage to be both fancy and casual at the same time, much like a necktie with Taz on it. Feel gussied up without too much fuss with today's Groupon: for $20, you get $40 worth of French cuisine at West Plains Bistro in Burlington.
With charming murals of European scenes dancing on the walls, high-backed booths, and plenty of natural light, West Plains Bistro offers a respite for fine dining and relaxation. After perusing the dinner (or lunch) menu, diners can feast upon masterfully presented dishes such as pate en croute made onsite and served with a poached pear, port jelly and gourmet crackers ($12). Spoon into an ever-changing bowl of soup du jour ($7) or initiate the culinary launch sequence with meuslin greens ($7) and rustic crab cakes ($15). Heartier entrees include indulgences such as slow-cooked merlot-braised lamb shanks ($25) and filet mignon au poivre ($34). Complete the transition from an innie to an outie with a belly-button-bursting dessert ($9), such as sticky caramel pudding, Dutch apple torte, or tropical lime pie.
West Plains Bistro
At West Plains Bistro, chefs enhance classic European recipes with local, seasonal ingredients. They sprinkle salads and bruschetta with Woolwich goat cheese, for instance, and batter halibut in Niagara chardonnay. Dishes also showcase New World influences such as caramelized sweet potatoes and smoked bacon.
West Plains Bistro features a dining room steeped in European-inspired charm. Stained-glass lamps cast a warm glow on wrought-iron tables and bouquets of fresh flowers. The restaurant’s true gem is the outdoor patio, though, which has been modeled to resemble a quaint Parisian street, complete with flower boxes, street lamps, and Paolo Rossi juggling a soccer ball.
