Hailed by the Fay Observer for its celebration of local jazz history, WFSS 91.9 saturates airwaves with the syncopating rhythms and riffs of piano, horns, and percussion in a range of styles. The four-concert jazz series moves through the seasons, showcasing a springtime show on April 21 that brims with the drum beats of loft legend Ron Free and the lush lyrics of Nicole Henry. In a wintery performance on December 10, Gregg Gelb will blow snow and hot cocoa out of his saxophone to fete WFSS's 34th anniversary. Singles or quartets can kick off the series with October's performance, starring bassist John Brown, the director of Duke University's jazz program, or guests can treat ears to the series' conclusion on June 23 with toe-tappers from Steve Hobbs and the William Gerald Quintet. All shows take place in Seabrook Auditorium, a venue as acoustically pleasing as the inside of a seashell.
