Commuting via boat has a number of advantages: there are no traffic jams, there are no hitchhikers with hooks for teeth, and if you hit a deer, it's definitely the deer's fault. Enjoy a convenient cruise with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get two tickets to a 70-minute harbor tour from Whaling City Expeditions in New Bedford (up to a $30 value). Vessels depart from the Waterfront Visitors Center on Pier 3 of Fisherman’s Wharf at noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. Sightseers can schedule a trip from mid-June through the end of September.

Featured prominently in Melville’s Moby Dick, the New Bedford waterfront is home to 250 years of seafaring history. During the 70-minute cruise, budding sea dogs can survey the storied harbor from aboard an intimate tour boat, absorbing salt-seasoned factoids through the knowledgeable captain's narration. Cruise past industrious fishing boats off-loading scallops and graceful yachts to reach the 9,100-foot-long New Bedford Harbor hurricane barrier, then watch the 19th-century Palmer’s Island lighthouse exchange winks with passing harbor seals. Other nearby attractions include the Revolutionary War–era Fort Phoenix and the New Bedford Whaling Museum, which tourists can visit or view through a pretend spyglass.

Although all tours are contingent on the weather, boats are scheduled to depart hourly during the Working Waterfront Festival on September 24–25.

About Whaling City Expeditions

Whaling City Expeditions whisks passengers out onto the storied waters of New Bedford Harbor to explore a port that has seen the departures and returns of ships and their sailors for more than 250 years. Entering their 21st Season, Captain Jeff Pontiff and his team steer boats out into the picturesque waters. In the evenings, step onboard for a sunset cruise, a BYOB excursion where passengers can watch the sun dip below Palmer Island lighthouse and place bets on the exact time of sunset with the other passengers.
